Richardson qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Clarksville, Tenn. – Hunter Richardson has barely gone a day this summer without hitting a golf ball.

The record-setting junior golfer from UT Martin has played in some of the elite state and regional amateur tournaments, and often has been in contention heading into the final round.

Richardson tied for 11th in the 69th annual SunTrust Tennessee State Open after only being a couple shots off the lead heading into the final nine holes.

An 11th place finish was nothing compared to Richardson’s finish in Bowling Green, Ky. Monday.

Richardson’s summer hit a crescendo at the Bowling Green Country Club when he qualified for his second U.S. Amateur after shooting a 67-70 – 137 to finish as co-medalist in a 36-hole qualifier.

Richardson also played in the 2014 U.S. Amateur.

The 2017 U.S. Amateur will be held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades Calif., Aug. 14-20.

Richardson won’t have time to celebrate his return to the U.S. Amateur; on Thursday he will play in the 111th Southern Amateur Championship at Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C.

Richardson continues to set impressive personal finishes during 2017.

Richardson became the first UT Martin golfer to earn OVC Golfer of the Year, and was all-conference for the third straight year. He won five tournament titles, including the OVC Tournament Championship.

Leaver ties for first at Barbasol Championship Open

Former Austin Peay golfer Grant Leaver finished in a three-way tie for first place at the Barbasol Championship Open qualifier at the Auburn University Club in Auburn Ala. Monday.

Leaver, a native of Centerville, shot a 5-under 67.

In July, Leaver finished runner-up in the Tennessee State Open.
